Discovery Center Programs – October 2017
The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park is Free and open to the public Wednesday – Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 7
10:00 a.m. Indoor Hawk I.D. Class Join us at the Discovery Center for an indoor hawk identification class! Learn characteristics of flight, wing beat and shape for identification from a distance.
11:00 a.m. Hungry Critters Watch the animals that call the Discovery Center home during meal time! As they chow down, you will get the opportunity to learn about their species and the personal stories.
2:00 p.m. Monarch Talk Stop by the Monarch Butterfly tank on the front deck of the Discovery Center to learn about these AMAZING creatures! We will go over the Monarch life cycle and tag butterflies that are ready to start their 2,000- mile journey.
Sunday, October 8
11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Hawkwatch weekend continued at Dan’s Rock in Frostburg. Spotters on site will help identify birds as they migrate through.
Saturday, October 14
10:00 a.m. Fall Colors Hike Join the Naturalist for a guided hike on Meadow Mountain to experience fall colors. Explore the changing seasons through trees, flowers, and wildlife. 2 hrs. Moderate hiking.
1:00 p.m. First Impressions Some animals are born with a bad reputation. This interactive program shows that even creepy crawlies have their own important role in nature. Great for all ages.

11:00 a.m. While You Were Sleeping What happens in the environment around us as we go to sleep for the night? Join the naturalist to learn about things that go bump in the night and that wander past a trail camera! Hands on and great for all ages!
Saturday, October 21
2:00 p.m. Brant Mine Hike Take a guided hike with the naturalist to the historic Brant Mine. The hike begins in the center in our newly-designed mine room. Once at the mine site you will see the remnants of a coal mine that was operated in the 1920’s. Plus, you never know what wildlife we will see on the way. Approx. 1 3/4 hour. Moderate walking.

11:00 a.m. Bats – Mammals of the Night Sky Join us for an exciting look at an often misunderstood creature. Get the opportunity to learn about bats and spend some time outside with a bat researcher and her equipment.

11:00 a.m. Owloween Event Meet the owls that call the Deep Creek Lake State Park Aviary their home and take a selfie with these cool birds! Come dressed in your Halloween costume to make the memory even more special. We are asking for a $5 donation for pictures with the birds. All proceeds from this event benefits our Aviary and our birds.
