Discovery Center Programs – January 2018

The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park is Free and open to the public Friday – Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Monday, January 1

10:00 a.m. First Day Hike Meet at the Discovery Center to hike the Beckman’s Loop Trail on this national day of hiking. Appropriate for all ages.

 

Saturday, January 6

11:00 a.m. Creating an Owl Join the Naturalist as we talk about the adaptations and secrets of owls. Meet one of our owls up close and then create your own. Develop nature journaling skills through observation and drawing or just come for fun.

1:00 p.m. Tracks & Trails Walk Join the Naturalist for a one-hour walk looking for animal tracks and signs of wildlife. Dress for the weather!

 

Sunday, January 7

11:00 a.m. First Impressions Some animals are born with a bad reputation. This interactive program shows that even creepy crawlies have their own important role in nature. Great for all ages.

 2:00 p.m. Aviary Feeding Stop by during lunchtime for our birds to watch them eat! Get a chance to learn the stories of how they came to be in our care, plus facts about their species.

 

Saturday, January 13

11:00 a.m. While you Were Sleeping What happens in the environment around us as we go to sleep for the night? Join the naturalist to learn about things that go bump in the night and that wander past a trail camera!

1:00 p.m. Hungry Critters Watch the animals that call the Discovery Center home during mealtime as they chow down. You will get the opportunity to learn about their species and their personal stories.

 

Sunday, January 14

11:00 a.m. Snowshoeing for Beginners Learn the basics of snowshoeing and join the Naturalist for a trek around the Discovery Center. Snowshoes are provided. Free-please call for reservations.

2:00 p.m. Aviary Feeding Stop by during lunchtime for our birds to watch them eat! Get a chance to learn the stories of how they came to be in our care plus facts about their species.

 

Saturday, January 20

11:00 a.m. Tracks & Trails Walk Join the Naturalist for a one-hour walk looking for animal tracks and signs of wildlife. Dress for the weather!

1:00 p.m. Turtle Talk and Craft Learn about Maryland’s turtles and meet our Discovery Center turtles up close. A brief craft will follow.

 

Sunday, January 21

11:00 a.m. Snowflake Discovery Join the Naturalist to learn about snowflakes! Make a snowflake craft and try to capture “snowflake prints” if weather permits.

2:00 p.m. Aviary Feeding Stop by during lunchtime for our birds to watch them eat! Get a chance to learn the stories of how they came to be in our care plus facts about their species.

 

Saturday, January 27

11:00 a.m. Meet the Owls Join the Naturalist as we talk about the adaptations that make owls unique among birds. Meet the three species of owls that live in our aviary up close!

1:00 p.m. Snowshoeing for Beginners Learn the basics of snowshoeing and join the Naturalist for a trek around the Discovery Center. Snowshoes are provided. Free-please call for reservations.

 

Sunday, January 28

11:00 a.m. Pinecone Bird Feeder Making It’s that time of year again! As you are making a pinecone bird feeder to take home with you, learn about the birds that are stopping by the Discovery Center bird feeders.

2:00 p.m. Aviary Feeding Stop by during lunchtime for our birds to watch them eat! Get a chance to learn the stories of how they came to be in our care, plus facts about their species.
