Discovery Center Programs – September 2017

The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park is Free and open to the public 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  daily

Tuesday, August 1

Science Room Fun Our Science Room will be staffed to guide people of all ages through the activities that this hands-on space has to offer.

2:00 p.m. Butterflies & Flowers Join the Naturalist for a walk around the Discovery Center grounds observing the butterflies that use our native plants. Learn the difference between native and non-native plants and their effects on our environment.

 

Wednesday, August 2

11:00 a.m. Buzz into Pollination Bzzzzz, Bzzzz, come see what all the buzz is about! Did you know there are more pollinators than just bees? Did you know we wouldn’t have most of our crops or even tequila without these special critters? Join as we fly into the fun! We will even have a sample of a sweet treat for which we can thank a pollinator.

2:00 p.m. Aviary Encounter Join us to learn some interesting facts, hear each bird’s story, and watch these amazing raptors eat!

 

Thursday, August 3

10:00 a.m. Brant Mine Hike Take a guided hike with the naturalist to the historic Brant Mine. The hike begins in the center in our newly-designed mine room. Once at the mine site you will see the remnants of a coal mine that was operated in the 1920’s. Plus, you never know what wildlife we will see on the way. Approx. 1 3/4 hour. Moderate walking.

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Fire Tower Open Take a self-guided hike to the historic Thayerville Fire Tower and meet our knowledgeable staff to experience the view of a lifetime.

 

Friday, August 4

8:00 a.m. Birding at Deep Creek You’ll learn how to bird by sight and by ear as we listen for distinctive songs on a stroll through the park. Bring binoculars and meet at the Discovery Center.

11:00 a.m. Creating an Owl Join the Naturalist as we talk about the adaptations and secrets of owls. Meet one of our owls up close and then create your own. Develop nature journaling skills through observation and drawing or just come for fun.

2:00 p.m. What’s that Reptile? Come to the Discovery Center to learn about the reptiles and amphibians in the center and you may have a chance to touch these amazing cold-blooded creatures!

 

Saturday, August 5

11:00 a.m. Hungry Critters Meet us inside the Discovery Center as we feed the critters! You will be given a chance to touch a live reptile or amphibian!

8:00 p.m. Scales & Tales Campfire There’s nothing better than a holiday weekend, and a Scales & Tales Campfire. Get the chance to meet some of our animal ambassadors while learning the story of how they came to be in our care. Marshmallow roasting to follow.

11:00 a.m. First Impressions Some animals are born with a bad reputation. This interactive program shows that even creepy crawlies have their own important role in nature. Great for all ages.

2:00 p.m. Aviary Encounter Join us to learn some interesting facts, hear each bird’s story, and watch these amazing raptors eat!

 

Monday, August 7

10:00 a.m. Fishing with the Naturalist Kids 7 and up join us on the shores of the Discovery Center for fishing basics. Poles, bait, and tackle are provided. $4/person, adults (16+ must have a license). Pre-registration is required as space is limited.

2:00 p.m. Aquatic Adventures Join the Naturalist in the Discovery Room of the Center for this exciting adventure! We will head to the docks to use aqua scopes and dip nets to catch critters and fish that call Deep Creek home.

9:00 p.m. Astronomy at the Discovery Center with Gus Johnson – Perseid Meteor shower! Join our knowledgeable staff at the Discovery Center parking lot for a night of stargazing. Don’t forget a chair and a blanket!
